Lots of people like the idea of birds flocking to the garden, which is perhaps why some people work to attract them. Luckily for animal lovers, they may just be able to pull this off if they place a simple item outdoors.
A birdwatcher has recently detailed what people need to do to ensure they hurry to the garden, and keep coming back. It’s expert advice worth noting, as it will ensure your outdoor space is full of life, and you’ll also get to regularly hear the lovely sound of the birds singing while they enjoy your garden at the same time.
It’s not the only piece of advice to be shared on the topic either. Months ago, it was revealed there’s something else you can do to invite them to visit.
Martin Cormican, known on Instagram as Martin’s Birdwatch, told people what they need to do. He said: “It’s easy to attract birds to your garden, however small and close it is to a city.
“By providing a variety of food sources, positioning your feeders carefully, and providing fresh, clean water, you will attract a wide range of common birds to your garden all year round, as well as a few surprises. The key thing is to ensure that you meet the needs of your birds all year round, especially in the winter months when they need us the most.”

Martin added: “I hate to see people putting up feeders in the summer months then neglecting them for the rest of the year because they haven’t seen many birds coming to their feeders. Activity generally builds up over the years as more birds get into the habit of visiting your garden.
“The best ways to ensure that they return is to make sure your feeders are always full. Fresh, clean water for drinking and bathing will also attract birds into your garden.”
Little you may know, water is all you need to encourage them. This is because, as well as keeping them hydrated, it also helps them to wash and clean their feathers.
Birds are highly attracted to water noise as it suggests a safe water source is near. The sound of splashing, bubbling or dripping water acts as a natural beacon, attracting them from a distance far more effectively than still water.
However, if you place water outdoors, make sure you change it often. You need to ensure it’s clean for them to drink.
What to feed birds
If you want to feed birds, there are a few things you can leave outside. They particularly like high-energy staples like sunflower seeds, nyjer seeds, peanuts and suet.
Kitchen scraps like uncooked oats, plain cooked pasta and rice and dried fruit (like raisins and sultanas) are also considered good options, particularly in winter. Live food like mealworms provides essential protein, especially during nesting season.
Just make sure anything large is chopped up finely for them. Never leave any items that are too chunky for them to swallow.
This is all you need to know to feed birds well. You can leave food outdoors to encourage them to visit.
