The unpredictable nature of British weather frequently leaves gardeners uncertain about when to resume mowing their lawns. Fortunately, specialists at BLACK+DECKER have pinpointed the precise date to dust off the lawnmower and tackle the grass once more.

As part of their Grassroots initiative, designed to help people cultivate healthier, lusher lawns, the experts have examined Met Office data from the previous two years to determine the optimal timing for this year’s first cut. According to their findings, it’s imminent.

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) states that grass ceases to grow when temperatures drop below 7°C, which means that based on Met Office data analysed by BLACK+DECKER, gardeners should anticipate their first mow in March 2026, reports the Express.

Nick Ee, the company’s product training manager, commented: “Whilst there are many contributing factors that play into the optimum time to mow a lawn here in the UK, our research shows that the middle of March is likely a good time to start.

“However, I’d urge everyone to keep checking their local forecasts beforehand, as we know how quickly the weather can change.”

“It’s also important to consider other elements such as rain, frost and wind as these conditions will have an impact on the task at hand and Britain is no stranger to an ice blast or two in spring.”

To assist Brits further in deciding when to make their first cut, Nick has outlined the risks posed by different weather conditions. Nick said: “Wet grass clumps together, leading to an uneven cut and clogs in the lawnmower. It can also tear rather than cut cleanly, making grass vulnerable to disease.

“In terms of damage to equipment, moisture can cause rust on mower blades and clog the deck, reducing its overall performance and lifespan.”

It is equally vital to avoid mowing when there is frost or freezing temperatures, or when strong winds are expected.
