Spring is just around the corner, Atlanta! And we’re already getting excited for all the floral fun, sunny days, and warm spring days! But no one is quite as excited for this spring’s flower power fun as the Atlanta Botanical Garden, as they celebrate their big 50th birthday this year. Atlanta SUPER Blooms!
Every year, Atlanta hosts a beautiful spring bulb extravaganza called Atlanta Blooms! on the Great Lawn, but this year, it’s not just Atlanta Blooms!… it’s Atlanta Super Blooms!
Why? Great question: the Botanical Garden is turning 50, and to celebrate, they’ve planted double the number of bulbs they usually plant. The effect is expected to be an immersive experience in blooms like none other the Garden has undertaken.
And, why, exactly did they plant so many bulbs?
Not only is it the 50th anniversary, but the Atlanta Botanical Garden decided that, since it’s been over a decade since its last renovation, the Great Lawn needs a total face lift. But then, they ran into an interesting conundrum: to renovate the space, they’d need to remove alllll the existing turf on the lawn.
The Atlanta Botanical Garden says,
…So last year a bulb (the light kind) went off with Garden horticulturists who wondered: Why not plant the lawn with swaths of tulips and other bulbs before installing new sod?
In other words, this is a one-of-a-kind special event at the Botanical Garden! (And possibly the best spot to get all your spring photo ops!)
When will the flowers bloom?
Great question… of course, we can’t know for certain until they actually bloom, but we expect the big bloom to happen in March and April.
But you can actually see for yourself before you go! The Great Lawn Bloom cam will stream daily from 8am to 6pm, so you can check in on the progress of the blooms and plan your visit accordingly.

And once the blooming starts, you can actually expect more fun events and happenings, from garden parties with classy cocktails and elevated cuisine to kids’ events focused on education and fun!
