Police are investigating the alleged kidnapping of a 40-year-old gardener from Malick, Barataria, who reportedly told his wife he was being held in Venezuela and that a ransom of $200,000 was being demanded for his release.
The missing man has been identified as Doodnath Khan of Fourth Street, Malick. He is a Guyanese national who resides in Trinidad. Around 5.30 a.m. on February 21, a 38-year-old woman of the same address, reported to the Barataria Police Station that she had received a live video call via WhatsApp at approximately 4.50 a.m. from her husband. During the call, Khan stated that he had been kidnapped earlier that morning and taken to Tucupita, Venezuela, before the call was disconnected.
She reported receiving a subsequent WhatsApp call from his phone during which he stated that his captors were demanding $200,000.
The woman told police that she last saw her husband around 7 a.m. on February 20 when he left home to tend a garden at Hasmath Ali Street, Johnny King Road, Aranguez. He was driving a white H100 motor vehicle and was dressed in a red T-shirt and black three-quarter pants. At approximately 9.30 p.m. that day, he contacted her and said he was finishing work and would return home shortly.
PC Ball and officers from the Barataria CID and Barataria Police Station visited the garden at Hasmath Ali Street, where they observed a wooden and galvanised structure with its western door open. On the ground in front of the door, officers saw a small area of blood, a cutlass with what appeared to be a blood-stained handle, a black knapsack, a pair of blue and white slippers and a black tie-strap. No one was seen on the premises.
W/Cpl Solomon-Rajkumar and PC Ali of the NED CSI Unit processed the scene. Also visiting were Cpl Telesford and officers of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, along with Acting Insp Dickson. PC Ball is continuing enquiries.
