In this butterfly gardening vlog, I am expanding the bird garden around the perimeter of my backyard! I’m planting a small Elderberry tree and two Dahoon Holly shrubs. Both of these are Florida native plants that will provide essential food and shelter for birds while attracting pollinators with their flowers. I’m also dealing with a bit of a mystery! I discovered that an unknown snacker has been eating my milkweed and Mexican sunflower seedlings, so I’m sharing exactly how I protect these vulnerable plants to ensure they survive.
Plus, I have a fun unboxing to share! I ordered some beautiful Pentas plants from Amazon. I’ll show you what they look like, how I’m potting them up, and where they fit into my Zone 10a garden.

  1. I have no idea why, but I’ve never been able to keep a Dahoon Holly alive. Drives me crazy. I grow Palatka Hollies instead. They love my yard, so in theory Dahoons should too πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

That’s a good place for the Elder Berry.

So far two of my Pipe Vines are showing signs of life.

I have a Corky Stem in a pot growing on a trellis in a protected area, it looks fine & has strangely large leaves. Genes can be weird. I’m going to try to propagate it and see if the weirdly big leaves get passed along. Should I do cuttings or seeds?

  2. Well that stinks that your munching friend is back. I hope your covers work. 🀞 Your new pentas look nice and healthy. I hope they grow fast so we will know if they are the tall ones. My backyard ones have not shown any signs of regrowth. But at least a few out front survived. 🌺🌸 It was nice to see you back to planting in the garden Susan. ❀🌼🌺🌸

  3. I love my elderberries, I have pop-ups all over the yard. One I can see out the kitchen window and it often has birds looking for bugs or eating the berries.

  4. When I saw the title I was like β€œI bet Susan stuck the seedlings outside to catch some rays and the sneaky snacker got to them in broad daylight!” Then I saw the video and was quickly proven wrong. Eating them and leaving such a mess is so wasteful it’s not even funny. At least the taming seedlings should be safe. Just so you know I can get anywhere from 2-22 inches of snow this week and this apparently came out of nowhere with no explanation for it, so I’ll keep you posted on thatπŸ˜‚

  5. That would be awesome if you sold your heirloom pentas online. I have never seen the heirloom ones at nurseries in my area.
