My spouse picked these up at a food bank and thought they were beets (they weren't marked), but we’re not sure. It’s pretty black, rather than the red or purple I’m used to seeing in a beet.

I’m also kind of wondering if it might be a radish of some sort—I honestly have no idea.

My spouse thought it was a beet gone bad, but I’m not so sure. It’s very firm and doesn’t smell rotten or anything, only earthy.

I got black radishes from the farmer’s market once. I tried eating them raw. They were the hottest radish I have ever tasted, like inedibly hot.

I’ve since figured out that if you cook radishes those chemicals break down and you’re left with a mild cabbagey-tasting root vegetable. If I find these again I’ll try them in a Japanese curry or something.

Black Spanish radish. They can be spicy. Radishes are good cooked though, and it takes the heat out of them

  3. Is it white and crisp on the inside? We call it rammenas, a radish closely related to daikon.

yes look like Black Radish- should be pretty hot-we used them as a horseradish replacement not the same but it worked

Turn on some skrillex and see if you drop it.

(I’ll see my millenial ass out of here)
