New aerial, bought yesterday for my gurl. I am wondering if the plant is suffering from the way it is hanging. I did it this way after taking the plastic off, it was suffocatinf a new born near the roots.
What do you suggest ?
Not at all! Aerial roots in nature exist to get more water for the plant, meaning you have to water them, so if you water these you will get water all over your table, not only this but the roots will be touching the table that will get dusty over time, which will attract lots and lots of diseases to the plant

Way to little light.
Also these roots will need daily soaking and multiple mistings this way.
It is really not intended to be used indoors without special setup

It’s a Vanda orchid. Very pretty setup but they are very light hungry and require humidity all the time, so if you want it bare rooted like that, you will have to keep those roots hydrated by watering everyday. People keep these outside in full sun, and inside with bright lights

Great idea for indoor hanging

Normally you want it in contact with some medium whether moss or charcoal or bark, that will hold at least a little moisture. When you spray water/fertiliser on the plant, you want to give it a chance to absorb it properly. Also, it needs plenty of sun, not sure if that’s a good setup for that. No grow lights nearby that I can see either?

You can invest in a grow light and position it on top of the plant… to deal with the humidity you could position a no hole seed tray under it to act as a cache pot with some water. Just an idea!

Have you read about vase culture or basket culture?
You can purchase or make an attractive cedar basket and add orchid media, cork, coir, and then get away with soaking it 1 ish times a week. Hang it right in a wjndow. Bumblebee orchid on YouTube does this with great success. It’s how I culture mine in low humidity. The leaves don’t care. The roots are happy.
I’ve never done vase culture but if you are going the grow light route then that seems to work well.
Either way, the plant needs lots more light. Like right in a window isn’t even ideal. And those roots need to be soaked 1-2 times a day if you’re not growing it in a basket or vase.

Can’t these live submerged in water?

Needs way more light and humidity. Otherwise interesting artistic concept

I live in swfl and honestly I don’t think I’d even try to keep a vanda indoors even though we have better window lighting and more indoor humidity than most places. They have such a high demands for both of those things.
But yes, I have local orchid friends who keep them mounted loose like yours (or on a bark mount medium) outside and as others have said if the roots don’t have a moisture retaining medium they do need to be watered daily

I love the look, but worried that it needs more light and moisture

My vandas stay outside- they need lots of light.
Now stick two humidifiers and your good to go!
