Sometimes the seasons can crisscross in colorful ways, with one wave of blooming specimens intersecting, at least in time, with another.
Look to Descanso Gardens, which enjoys a few different periods of petal prettiness as winter begins to wrap up each year.
There are the famous camellias dotting the La Cañada Flintridge property, those flowers that don’t seem to mind cooler weather. Simultaneously, “Pink Season” moves into magnificent gear as February winds down (think of the gorgeous Pink Cloud cherry and fruit trees festooning the Japanese Garden).
But there’s still room for more marvels: The first tulips of the season begin to pop around the final days of February, the showy sentries that spectacularly speak to the ethereal event that will soon transform the garden’s Promenade.
Descanso Gardens shared the first tulip photo of the 2026 season on Feb. 20, an image that reveals that a few flowers are starting to open and stand tall.
There are thousands more to come, tens of thousands, really, for around 30,000 tulip bulbs were planted by staff members and volunteers around the middle of January. (Some 35,000 bulbs were reported at planting time, with the current number settling in closer to 30,000, still highly and fully impressive.)
By the middle of March, and the later part of the third month, the tulips will be in full wowza mode, with a kaleidoscopic carpet on dazzling display.
Call it an uplifting sign of things soon to come: The season’s first tulips arriving, with petal-y promise and plenty of splendor to spare.
How to behold the camellias, the cherry trees, and, when the ebulliently arrive in March, the tulips? Admission to Descanso Gardens is all that’s needed.
