While it’s still chilly in Essex, spring is just around the corner. One Essex garden centre sells all sorts of plants, and the local village is a spot where you can spend all afternoon!

Established in 1953, Hillcrest Nurseries in Herongate is a family-owned business offering garden plants and trees. It’s a lovely place to wander along meandering paths, surrounded by mature trees and conifers, and to experience a peaceful garden-like setting.

It also stocks a complete range of trees, shrubs and perennials to suit all tastes and styles of gardening. Once you’re done getting your garden ready for spring, there are lots of local pubs you can visit, too, such as the Green Man and the Boar’s Head.

Locals and visitors love the garden centre, too – with some going so far as to drive past 5 other nurseries to visit this one! Local guide Jason Bull said: “I actually drive past 5 other nurseries to get here because the staff here are not only knowledgeable but happy to help a complete novice with advice on everything plant-y.

“Plants always look healthy and cared for, a bit more expensive than other bigger nurseries, but the quality speaks for itself. Plus, supporting a local family-run business is worth the extra couple of quid.”

Sharon Watts added: “My favourite nurseries. Staff are always friendly and helpful. The plants, trees, and shrubs – stunning. Plus, for a reasonable cost, they replant your baskets and tubs. Our local gem of a place in Herongate Village.”
