I always trim the roots when I get new plants. I’d cut like 50% off maybe.

If I received this cactus I would first clean the roots of any soil on them. Doing this will remove a bunch of the smaller roots. I would also run the roots under the sink faucet in warm water to help flush away the dirt from the roots. Just be careful not to break off any tap roots (thicker roots at the base of the cactus.) let the roots dry over night. Plant it in mostly inorganic material (rocks, pumice and other materials.) I use mostly river rocks and a bit of miracle grow cactus and succulent potting mix. I sift the soil of any wood chips or larger materials and then mix the finer soil with the rocks and some sand.
