JOHANNESBURG – The youngest son of late Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe has been arrested following the shooting of a gardener at his home in Johannesburg.
Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe (29) was detained alongside another man on Thursday on charges of attempted murder. The incident occurred at a property in a wealthy suburb north of the city.
Police spokeswoman Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that two suspects were arrested but initially declined to identify them. However, photographs published by IOL News on social media platform X showed Mugabe in handcuffs being escorted by police officers.
The gardener remains in critical condition. The motive for the shooting is not yet known and investigations are ongoing, according to Colonel Nevhuhulwi.
Mugabe is the youngest son of Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe’s former president who ruled for 37 years before being removed from power in a military takeover in 2017. The elder Mugabe died in 2019.
Bellarmine and his brother Robert Jr (33) live in Johannesburg where they have gained attention for their lifestyle.
The family has faced previous legal issues in the region. In 2019, their mother Grace Mugabe was accused of assaulting an employee at the family home in Zimbabwe with a shoe in 2017. She was also accused of assaulting a model with a power cable in Johannesburg the same year.
Robert Jr appeared in a Harare court in October last year on charges of cannabis possession, which he denies.
