BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — Even though winter’s chill hasn’t left us quite yet, you can start planning ahead for planting your garden in the spring.

Now is the time to start some of your seeds indoors.

West Virginia Department of Agriculture warns about seed scam

Crops like broccoli, cauliflower, and kale can be started indoors in a warm area of your home.

Beth Villers with the WVU Extension Agency, said you should take your time when you start to get these seedlings used to outdoor temperatures though.

“Yeah, you could move it to a cooler area in your house if you want to start it that way. Or you could take it outdoors for a certain amount of time before you plant it just to get it used to some outdoor temperatures,” said Villers.

Villers said if you make the transition from indoors to in-the-ground too quickly, you could shock the seedlings and risk them dying.

She said using cold frames outdoors is also an option.

Villers recommended following the guidelines on the seed packets for the best results.
