Gardeners looking to get a jump on spring planting will have a chance to stock up on everything from vegetables to citrus when Orange County Master Gardeners hosts its spring plant sale March 7.

The sale is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cormier Park, 8235 FM 1442, Orangefield. Organizers said shoppers can expect a wide selection of plants, including bedding plants, vegetables and “lots of tomato plants,” along with cucumbers, squash, more than 200 strawberry plants, herbs such as fennel and dill, hanging baskets, ferns, begonias and gerbera daisies.

Master gardeners will be on hand to help shoppers choose plants for their yards, including options for shade, and to offer advice on planting and care. Organizers said the sale will include Texas native plants and drought-resistant options, as well as a popular selection of citrus. Some fruit trees will also be available, with organizers emphasizing they focus on plants that will grow well locally.

Organizers said many of the plants are homegrown, with some volunteers starting plants as early as December. Their goal is to be self-sufficient and grow everything except citrus, which they said takes longer to produce.

They also encouraged gardeners to get tomato plants in the ground now, noting that by June it can be too hot and tomato plants can begin to wither.

On the day of the sale, organizers said shoppers may want to bring a wagon to carry purchases. They said they arrive at 6:30 a.m. and open at 8 a.m., and they expect a line to form before opening.
