Lismore Castle Gardens
Nestled peacefully in County Waterford, in the south-east of Ireland, lies this idyllic town perfect for tourists to visit, where an imposing castle and flourishing gardens create a serene escape for day-trippers.
Positioned along the shores of the calm waters of the River Blackwater in the county’s northwest region, you’ll discover Lismore, a modest village brimming with historical tales waiting to be shared.
Over the passage of centuries, it has maintained its quietly charming character, with a population just exceeding 1,300 residents. The area is dominated by a magnificent castle over 900 years old, cathedral and several other heritage buildings in a haven for travellers.

The original castle occupying this remarkable location was constructed in 1185, perched on the water’s edge with a commanding presence over the surrounding landscape, reports the Irish Mirror.
However, it has been reconstructed twice since then, with the majority of the current structure rebuilt in the Gothic architectural style throughout the 1800s. Initially, it was owned by the Earls of Desmond, subsequently the Earls of Cork, and eventually transferred to the Cavendish family in 1753.
Currently, it serves as the Irish residence of the Duke of Devonshire, inhabited by Lord and Lady Burlington, the son and daughter-in-law of the 12th Duke. Though portions of the residence remain private for family use, and castle tours aren’t available to the general public, they provide an exclusive lodging opportunity. A ‘luxury venue’ inside the castle can be reserved for eight to 12 overnight guests and accommodate up to 27 individuals for private celebrations or functions.

Gardens
Whilst the castle remains closed to visitors, the public can explore all 10 acres of Lismore Castle Gardens, alongside its onsite art gallery and café. Garden lovers and those who enjoy strolling through stunning locations will find the grounds nestled within the castle’s 17th-century defensive walls.
The picturesque grounds are thought to be the oldest cultivated gardens in the nation and benefit from breathtaking views. Across its expansive acreage, visitors can discover a diverse array of plants and trees, all carefully maintained by the gardening staff, plus a surprise sculpture collection tucked throughout.
One guest noted: “Always such a beautiful place to visit. The gardens are well tended to, yet not overly manicured, and the environment and nature seem to be a priority. While I love to go in June when the roses and gardens are in full colour, it has plenty to offer outside of this.”
