Membership of Wick and District Gardening Club has increased in recent months and there was a turnout of more than 40 at the first meeting of the year, held in the club’s new venue of the Pulteney Centre.

The presenter this month was Neil Buchan, who invited members to “look up” instead of down at their gardens. He showed 30 photographs of parts of buildings, all taken within Caithness.

Members, either individually or in small groups, had to try to work out which building or landmark they were looking at. When the answers were revealed, many were amazed that they had not recognised buildings that they had walked or driven past hundreds of times and also appreciated the striking architecture in the local area.

The most observant was Carol Grant, who took first place on her own. The team of Anne Nightingale, Kereen Bruce and Anne Downie came second and there was a tie for third between two pairs – Margaret Sutherland and Dorothy Johnstone, and Marney Bruce and Virginia Miller.

The prizes were presented by Neil’s wife Liz.

The next meeting, the annual bulb show, will be held again in the Pulteney Centre, on Tuesday, March 10. As an added competition, members are being asked to decorate a hard-boiled egg.
