Welshpool Fire Station celebrated the launch of its new community garden on February 12 during a coffee morning open to the public.

Attendees included residents of Neuadd Maldwyn, an independent living development located just across the road from the station.

Kerry Hughes, station manager at Welshpool Fire Station, said: “This garden is more than just a green space, it’s a place where people can come together, unwind, and reconnect with nature.

“We’re proud to open it to the community and look forward to seeing it grow and flourish.”

The garden includes raised planters, trellises and a greenhouse, and has been designed to be fully accessible.

Visitors to the garden can use tools and equipment on-site.

During the opening event, attendees joined firefighters to plant flowers, herbs and shrubs in the newly built raised beds.

The project is part of a wider effort by the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) to support community wellbeing, engagement and environmental sustainability.

Recent garden schemes at other fire stations have focused on improving biodiversity, improving environmental sustainability and supporting staff wellbeing.

These efforts help MAWWFRS meet its obligations under the Section 6 Duty of the Environment (Wales) Act 2016.

The project was supported by the Welsh Government’s Local Places for Nature Programme and environmental charity Keep Wales Tidy.
