A new, all-abilities Sensory Garden has just opened at Serendip Sanctuary. This family-friendly space in Melbourne’s west encourages everyone to get out and experience being in nature, with five nature spaces related to each of the five senses. Go on a 300 metre loop around this peaceful garden, and engage your senses of sight, sound, scent, touch and taste.
Sensory Garden at Serendip Sanctuary
This garden was designed in consultation with community and accessibility groups. All of the paths, seating and benches are fully accessible, so everyone can explore the space.
Go on a self-guided walk around the space, or try out the audio walking tour. See brightly coloured native plants from window frames and planter boxes, smell fragrant plants from timber seating areas and listen to the sounds of birds and bees. Get a little hands-on and feel textured boulders, native plants and a water feature, and learn all about edible bush foods in the taste space.
As part of the works, the display pond was repaired, and is now home to some happy frogs, turtles and birds.
The garden also features native plants from the Wadawurring Traditional Owners Corporation nursery, as well as artwork by Wadawurring artist Jenna Oldaker.
What else can you do at Serendip Sanctuary?

Located on the base of the You Yangs, this 250 hectare space is home to over 150 different species of birds, as well as mammals like wallabies and kangaroos. Take a stroll on one of the gentle nature walks, including the popular Wildlife Walk, and watch the animals roam about their native habitat.
When you’re not on the trail, relax with a picnic or barbeque.
Please note that construction is currently underway, in order to provide more upgrades and visitor facilities. These include new picnic tables, barbeques, benches, parking, more accessible paths, upgrades to the nature walks and more. As a result, you might experience disruption or closure in some parts of the sanctuary. Learn more about the upgrades here.
