I'm in the middle of building a dome greenhouse. I saw a recent post talking about ground Insullation and flooring. Before I go too much farther I thought I should check in here and see if there is anything that I should be thinking about before I build out the planters and close it in. This is sitting on 6-12" of compacted gravel right now.

I saw something about adding Insullation around the outside at a 45? Do you have the top edge of the insulation along the outside wall and just dig the rest in? How deep does it need to be in the ground?

A perimeter of 12-18″ below ground should be enough. You don’t need to insulate the floor if you do that. If you are bothering with insulation, you probably want to insulate on the side away from the sun and only have it be clear on the side the sun hits it.

What growing zone are you in? How big is the dome?

Where did you get the brackets?

  4. If I was building from scratch I’d have some way to pump heat underground below the greenhouse. Storing heat is the hardest part of a greenhouse in a cooler climate.

Why in the world is there a FOOT of gravel in that area?

Hello! That looks amazing! I WAS going to build one for the same (greenhouse) but the size of 20feet wide was going to cost over $5K just in wood not even the polycarbonate panels. I chose to skip this….but maybe in the near future I will revisit this idea. Love it. Good luck and can’t wait to see it completed! Also, for reference, I was looking at Trilium Domes for the estimated cost of lumber and the such.
