What does it take for moss to survive outside of the terrarium? I had them only in closed space.

It is beautiful, but will be hard to keep it moist, consider to place it inside a glass dome

The shell can leach calcium and cause an imbalance in the pH of the moss substrate. I found that adding copper or sea shells to my moss gardens created patches of dead zones. Just an FYI.
