The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is bringing back National Gardens Week after a hugely successful first run last year.
South Africa (18 February 2026) – This gives South Africans a pass to explore some of the country’s most iconic botanical and zoological gardens. Free entry will be available at most of SANBI’s gardens from 9 to 15 March.
Last year, more than 126,000 South Africans walked through SANBI’s 11 national botanical and two zoological gardens during the inaugural week.
This year, the celebration comes with a theme that encourages everyone to be more mindful about nature and nurturing it. South Africa is incredibly biodiverse, home to over 95,000 known species – much to admire, and much to protect.
With your free National Gardens pass, you’re encouraged to think about your role in ‘celebrating, restoring, and protecting all life.’
“Last year’s response showed us that South Africans are hungry for these connections with nature, and we’re excited to open our gates once again,” said Shonisani Munzhedzi, Chief Executive Officer of SANBI. “Our gardens are living classrooms, places of restoration, and spaces where people can rediscover their connection to the natural world. This initiative ensures that more South Africans can experience that value, especially those visiting for the first time.”
Across all of SANBI’s gardens, there will be a range of programmes and activities on offer that focus on learning, relaxation, and discovery. Go for a guided walk, observe birds and insects, shop for plants, sign up for a wellness activities or get your hands dirty with some hands-on conservation education.
