We planted 6 'Excelsa' thuya 16 years ago, spaced 4' apart, for a back yard approx. 30' deep. Today we have a solid 30' tall hedge that is gorgeous. BTW, we're zone 7a in the PNW.
thank you for sharing, have a great day

Hi Steph! My son and family just bought a home and it was a new construction with no trees. They are currently planning to put in a living fence! Such a timely video. I will share it with him. Thank you!!
When we moved into our new house on 2.5 acres 20 years ago we bought bundles of arborvitaes from the County. They were just sticks. We couldn't afford established trees. We planted them all around our property including on the street side. We ended up with a drought and I watered and watered those tiny plants. 20 years later I have privacy around my whole property including the street. It was the best thing we did. I don't have to watch what is going on with the neighbors and have a park like setting and privacy. I was hoping they would block more noise as we are near a busy County road but they didn't. The one thing I don't like about our location.
What a great video! So informative and inspiring. I appreciate all of the editing that went into this. I have 3 arborvitae that are struggling – this reminds me to get them some more water. Thank you for sharing and inspiring- hyped! 🙌
Hi Steph 🌺.They are beautiful trees for privacy. I love them at your mom's and yours. Have a wonderful day.🌻🌺🌻🌺
We are about to move into a suburban neighborhood and this is the EXACT video we needed. Thank you, Steph
I love the privacy created in your parent’s garden. The staggered placement is also a great solution. Great info. Thanks for all the work put into making it 🌲🌲🌲
hi steph, those are some beautiful trees. thanks for sharing.
❤❤❤
Thanks Steph! This video was very timely for me. I am possibly planting some this fall. And one more thing, I appreciate your short-ish videos. I find it very hard to consume 45 minute or longer videos. Thanks again! This was very helpful!
I warn people about the spacing on Green Giants all the time. A home down the street from me has a double row of them on what looks like three foot centers. Naturally some have already died. Deer don't touch Green Giants in my area either (northern CT zone 6a). Off topic, but have you seen the variegated Thuja plicata 'Lucky Find' from Iseli? 😍
Remember that Bucks will rub on any Arborvitae until it gets large. Protect with netting during deer mating season.
i am doing this project I am using Proven Winners North Pole in my yard. Thank you for this video.
I wish I could plant a screen! The property line between us and a neighbor is only 3’ from our driveway, and it’s a dry creek at that. So no screen for us 😒
I so love the look of the Green Giant, has anyone had any luck growing them in zone 4? When I look them up it says they are only a zone 5. Any ideas on what else to plant beside evergreens/pines?
Hi Steph, I’m seeing Spring Grove arborvitae a lot lately in stores, it’s a smaller green giant type, I’m considering that in lieu of the green giants, which are replacing Leylands, have you seen any mature spring grove hedges? Also on spacing I have done so much research for a straight hedge and a lot of ppl recommend 5-6 ft apart for a quicker dense hedge for GG? I have GG as a single specimen and also a hedge of Junior green giants which grow much more slowly.
American Pillar is very similar to Green Giants only a lot narrower. They also grow very fast. We have not watered since the first year and they have done well through drought.
I bought a northern spire arborvitae this spring its zone 3-7 height 15-20 ft and width 4-5 ft!
Speaking as someone who worked in a company similar to Google: the thumbnail of your arborvitae video has a large font featuring the word “ privacy “ without mentioning in similar size of fonts that the video is really talking about privacy hedges and tree. “privacy “ is a big word and it being spotlighted could’ve triggered some sensitive flags that pushed your video down or have confused YouTube algorithm that this video belongs to a different category. Also this thumbnail seems to be a different style than your other videos, I know because I’m a long time fan 😊 this could have confused the algorithm. Consistency is key in a lot of social media algorithms.
Just thought I should share. Love your videos as always!!😊
What is the footage spacing between each green giant ?
Great video! Thank you, Steph!
Just bought some today, and was coming to your channel for advice perfect timing !❤
Hey Steph! 😊 Thanks so much for sharing info on the new Iseli Green Screen Arborvitae!🌲 Great timing as I’ve always preferred the loose lacy structure of the Green Giant but it’s way too big for my suburban lot. Don’t really care for the tighter structure of the Emerald Green. Now on the hunt to see where I can find the Iseli Green Screen! 👍🏼
Have a blessed Sunday!
~ Jaisa 💚
Yikes I didnt realize Mugo Pine got that tall lol better move mine before the winter!
Thanks for the tip about the Iseli option. There are so many new varieties, it's hard to keep up to date, so thanks again for letting us know about them.
What a wonderfully shot video! Kudos to the editor and videographer.
I have a question and would like to hear what you would recommend. I have 3 Green Giant arborvitaes at full growth in my yard. My home association wants me to reduce the size by cutting the tops off so they are more inline with the roof level. The trees are about 30 to 35 ft tall so I have to remove about 7 to 8 ft off the tops. I would like to know your thoughts if the trees can handle the shock and survive.
Wow, this was great content. I learned so much about the differences with the arborvitaes. I love the way you explain everything in detail and show examples as well. Thank you again!!
Can you provide some other options for privacy trees? I just want to do something different than an arborvitae as it seems everyone in the neighborhood has them! Thanks!
I’ve spent many hours on YT researching fo privacy plant options and your emerald green arborvitae, green giant series is far beyond the best out there. May I suggest you also invest on American pillar arborvitae for experimentation
I planted a living fence four years ago bc we were planning to put in a pool. I didn’t stick with traditional a planted Dwarf Alberta Spruce on each end, a Blue Ice Arizona Cypress, Forever Golden Arborvitae, and a Garnet Japanese Maple in the middle. At the base I have two Golden Mop Cypress, and two Blue Star Junipers. In the fall they are the most vibrant before the Maple loses its leaves and put on quite a show. My neighbor acted a little offended but now she loves them and has planted a bed on her side and refers to the trees as “the pretty ladies!” 🍁
Excellent video on planting Green Giant arborvitae for a living fence. We’re not permitted a privacy fence in our neighborhood so in an effort to create a sense of enclosure and a windbreak we planted a mix of evergreens around 3 sides of our 1.3 acre property. We began with 48 trees 11 yrs ago, all root stock. The GG arborvitae were approx. 18” tall “branches” and quickly grew to an impressive height. We have a deer run behind the row on the back and they’ve not munched on them yet but the trunk of one tree keeps getting damaged. The other trees are Norway Spruce, Co Blue Spruce, Nellie Stevens Holly and White Pines. They are all getting a good size now and doing their job wonderfully. And they all make excellent Christmas greens! So if budget is a concern and you don’t mind waiting a few yrs, root stock is the way to go, especially for the Green Giant!
Thank you! We are in Western Washington and planted green giants on one side of our acre lot, 5 feet on center in October. The house next door is 2 story and these will be a nice privacy hedge. I’m glad to see they grow quickly. On the opposite side we planted Excelsa Cedar, a different cultivar of the green giant that is a bit thicker and shorter. Both are in full sun and it rains at least 3 times a week until summer. I know it takes a year or two for root growth, but watching your video makes me excited for the next few years.
its amazing how big these grow. some of my neighbors have ones that were planted 15 years ago and they are more than 40 feet tall. magnificent
Great video. I really enjoy seeing full size specimens and examples in real life. Most videos don't show the finished product, so it's hard to imagine how they look at maturity, and how the privacy screen will look from different perspectives.
Those trees SUCK in North Texas. They suffer greatly from a pest that kills them in a matter of weeks. Killed every one I had.
My emerald green planting instructions showed 4' between them. 🤔
Awesome video! Super helpful. Your examples are really good. Thanks!
Great ❤
This was so helpful! Thank you for the info!
