It’s time to snap up those packets and boxes of summer bulbs that are appearing in garden centres and your local supermarket. While they are often labelled as bulbs, this usually includes corms, tubers and rhizomes.
These are all essentially underground storage organs, whereby a plant stores nutrients over winter in either underground swollen stems or leaves and, once planted in spring, will produce fresh green shoots. Knowing which is which will help guide you in their planting.
