We got CRUSHED with record breaking cold and snow for weeks, and my vegetable garden took it, full force. This record breaking freeze gave me an opportunity to evaluate which winter crops are the most cold hardy vegetables, and this video reveals shocking findings: dozens of plants that laughed at single digit cold, ice and snow!

  1. If you enjoyed the video, please LIKE it and share it with family and friends! Did any of your crops survive the record cold this winter? Let us know which did in the Comments!

  2. Your brassicas did waaaaay better than mine here is AZ. We’ve had record heat this winter, even with shade cloth they still bolted, very disappointing. Just shows it’s easier to protect from cold than heat.

  3. i have a question that could even make a great video idea.. I saw that you have a lot of plants in black containers and i do as well. Recently i noticed that with direct sun hitting the black containers it was really heating up the soil, almost too much. I am looking towards summer when heat will be brutal thinking it cant be good to have soil temps of over 100 degrees. I noticed most of your containers are black and was just wondering if you had any trouble with that especially in summer cooking the root system. I know you could just use lighter colored containers or may even benefit from the warming effect in the cooler months but maybe you can help me with this, thanks!

  4. Awwwwwww…. 9.7°😂😂😂😂 Try below 0… Some of us have to stop gardening altogether for a few months.

  5. The bok Choy looks perfect!! You only lost a few Romaine seeds taking a gamble, but you won the Romaine fight on the southern part of your house.

It has been a few years here in Pinehurst NC since we got snow. This winter I had to water because of the dryness.
I am excited for the tomatoes and peppers planting video coming up.
You have a lot of good cold crops to enjoy. That is encouraging

  6. Hi from Florida. Up by the big bend. Um that freeze was worse inland than coast. But garden took a hit. Hoping the over wintered peppers survive

  7. Next year going to take on the winter. We were below zero due to wind chill. Part of my garden is protected from the wind so will see next year. Glad your garden did great .

  8. Being in the south, you have the luxury of your ground not freezing solid. Crop covering don't work in suburban Detroit. Stop by a try to dig a hole! You won't be without a jack hammer!

  9. I think your onions did better than mine did in S Ga. But they were only covered with a raised sheet. My extra frost cloth did not arrive in time. Oh and my Bibb and Black seeded Simpson lettuces did just fine with just frost cover.

  10. i plopped some spinach and lettuce seeds in the hoop house on new year’s day, and we had similar cold weather. I still have a number of plants a couple of main leaves going!

  11. All of my garden did beautifully in the freeze but my lettuce had so many lettuce bugs for the first time ever. No matter what I did it didn’t kill them so I finally just pulled them up

  12. Way down in South FL near Ft Lauderdale, and my bird bath had a solid sheet of ice both Sun and Mon morning . My cukes were shot the first morning, and the 25 mph wind gusts both nights burned a lot of my tomato plant leaves, but in the ensuing days the tomatoes seem to be getting new growth and flowering. And odd thing, the mango tree flowered in Dec and set fruit, after this cold snap it is flowering again.

  13. Videos like this make me feel like I’ll have success with my first garden this year and it’s not as hard as it seems 😅

  14. Here in Southern California I can't grow greens. They go right to seed. But right now I have cilantro, bok choy and parsley growing wild

  15. I know!. I moved to the southeast of NC from just south of the Virginia state line. We got enough snow, sleet and freezing rain and I certainly didn’t expect weather like we just had. But at least it’s not the norm.

  16. We had similar conditions in N Texas and I had Music garlic and Elephant garlic that spent a week encased in 5-6” of ice and the only damage was burnt leaf tips.

  17. Were the ends of the rows closed in also? The romaine that was next to your house, Was it covered? This was so informative. Thank you!

  18. Well my yard in fl was totally frozen ( Tropical Fruit trees ).
I didnt get a gd harvest of cabbage either. We had too many intermittent hot days , then the freeze .
I am devastated this year because most of my fruit trees were burnt , and now am going to have to source fruits later this year .😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢!

  19. Collards aren't good until they have had a frost on them, LOL Garden looks great considering our NC winter. The year 2000 was about like this. Doesn't happen often.

  20. I have some carrots, Egyptian walking onions, and bok choi out over winter here in Erie, PA under frost covers. They didn't die, but there wasn't any growth either, as the combination of the lack of daylight hours and cloudcover only provided just enough sunlight to put them in a dormant state. My hardneck garlic is garlicking under a 4" think layer of mulch as I planted at Halloween. My elderberries, blueberries, blackberries, and red raspberries have all survived polar voted winters before and are doing just fine. My blueberries only get winter damage if we get a massive snow event that puts too much weight on them – they are over 40, possibly 50 years old – we are unsure as the property only belonged to my family since 1987.

  21. We have had a very warm winter for the most part in the midwest. Still hit -30 a few times so 9 F seems just fine to us 😂 cheers.

  22. We didn’t get a single freeze this year where I live near Phoenix. We've already had highs in the low to mid 80s. I had to pull 90% of my lettuce and leaf spinach in the past couple of weeks due to bolting. The caterpillars have been wreaking devastation as well. I've gardened for 5 years and never found a single caterpillar in my garden before. This season, they're everywhere!

  23. Well, my garlic, carrots, onions, and strawberries survived. My beets and parsnips weren't so lucky. I'm pretty sure I have time so I'll replant this weekend.

Anthony, are the covers watertight? Will rain (or snow/ice melt) make it through to the veggies?

Also, your bok choy didn't look real, they were so perfect!

  24. Anthony what do I fertilize my apple tree with, and blueberry bushes what do I fertilize with and when
