Alice Mae Hardy Maney

Alice Mae Hardy Maney

Alice Mae Hardy Maney completed her life’s mission in the early morning of February 9th, 2026, her 89th birthday.

Born to William and Bernice Hardy in Appleton, Wisconsin, in 1937, Alice was the oldest of five children. She is survived by siblings Nancy, Carole and Jim, and was preceded in death by Janet. She often reminisced over her childhood memories of ice skating on the pond and horseback riding on the now-busy streets of Oak Creek.

A graduate of St. Mary’s Academy in Milwaukee, Alice developed a lifelong love of learning. She enjoyed studying Latin and could still recall the language in the weeks before her passing. Her sharp wit and love for reading remained constant throughout her full life.

Alice held a variety of interests, including ice skating, singing and playing saxophone in the River City Irregulars. A devoted gardener and member of local rose societies, she maintained a lovely array of roses in front of her house, earning her a residential award from the West Bend Beautification Committee. With the help of her children, she tenderly restored the property she called home, breathing vibrant life into her flower and vegetable gardens. Her backyard, filled with birdfeeders and plants, became a sanctuary for neighborhood wildlife of all kinds. It is a favorite place for quiet reflection, where she often spent time watching birds and butterflies.

She adored children and was committed to her faith. She was a member of Holy Angels Parish, teaching CCD classes and participating in the prayer chain for decades. She was seldom found without a rosary in reach.

Above all, her greatest joy was rooted in her profound love for her family. Alice was the beloved mother of ten children, survived by Andrew, Theresa, Michael (Kim), Mary Jo, Jennifer (Scott Richards), Peter, Marjorie (Hall), Jonathan and son-in-law Terry Kuss. She was preceded in death by son Patrick and daughter Peggy (Kuss), as well as her husband Bernard.

Alice was always ready to lend a hand, supporting and encouraging her grandchildren in every way, from reading them bedtime stories to cheering them on at sporting events. Her home was a refuge, a place of comfort and welcome for all who entered.

She will be greatly missed by 19 grandchildren: Angela, Elizabeth, Trevor, McKenzi, Jessica, Briea, Katelyn, Rozalyn, Drew, Steven, Brianna, Mikala, Hannah, Samantha, Benjamin, Natasha, George, Jon Paul and Paulette, and seven great-grandchildren: Elsa, Norah, Freya, Bodie, Paige, Athena, and Mia, with great-granddaughters Ridgely and Peichel on the way.

A visitation will be held Friday, March 13th at Holy Angels Catholic Church in West Bend at 3 p.m., and a mass will follow at 4 p.m. The family asks in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Audubon Society or the Arbor Day Foundation. Alternatively, the family asks that you simply remember her next time you feed the birds or tend your garden.

The Schmidt Funeral Home in West Bend is serving the family. If you would like to leave a message of comfort and condolence please visit www.schmidtfuneralhome.com
