Gardening with children is about more than just plants; it is about cultivating a lifelong connection with the natural world.
In this video, I share my personal approach to introducing the younger generation to the soil, focusing on three simple, high-impact projects that guarantee success and a sense of wonder.
Whether you are a parent or a grandparent, these activities are designed to be accessible, affordable, and, most importantly, fun. From the towering heights of sunflowers to the curious textures of a mini desert garden, we explore how to make the garden a place of adventure rather than a chore.

Ah, memories Alan! I'm in my 70s now but I remember my dad's allotment. One day me and my sister were with him and we wouldn't settle down and were running all over the place. Dad called us over, used a stick to make a drill and popped in a row of pea seeds. 'Right,' he said, 'sit there and watch them! A Mars Bar for the first one of you who sees one of them grow!' We sat there in deep concentration and I think both of us claimed the Mars Bar that day. But I tell you what, it got me interested in gardening. Now whenever I go out in the garden I always take a Mars Bar with me. Sounds daft but I think it's out of memory of my dear old, now late departed, dad. Thanks for the video.
Nice photo alan beautiful garden shed 🌿🪴
I started my girls off with a part of the veg patch, growing their own peas & carrots. Using familiar veg means they were keen to eat them and they loved it. I don’t think a single pea or carrot ever actually made it into the house.
They also had their own fruit section, one grew strawberries & the other had a blueberry plant in a big pot, again the fruits of their labours never saw the inside of the house.
100% agree on the sunflowers 🌻, you can get the whole family involved.
Great information Alan, I buy my Sun flower seeds from Poundland 400g for a £1. Not the best quality but they do grow. I place many in a tray with damp kitchen roll. 👍
When my boys were small, they loved growing potatoes in bags in our small garden. To harvest I would tip the bag out onto a tarpaulin and they would say they were digging for gold! 😊😊❤❤
Get them into gardening, while there young! Love it. Great video, Alan!👶🧒👦👧🧑🧑🌾👩🌾🌱🪴🌳🌻
Thanks for lovely video ❤👍🌹
My three year old will be sad, there is no "earthing" in a deluge. The dirtier the better 😂❤
That could be my grandad … sometimes a hat, sometimes a cap, but always a shirt and waistcoat! Lovely ideas for children and newbie adult gardeners alike. Thanks, Alan 🌱
i've planted up my crocs when I had to give up my allotment. i did the succulent gardens as an activity at our yearly allotment gatherings, used my plethora of bonsai dishes and my then bf experienced this rock garden as his first dabble into gardening and he was 40+ 😉 my crocs are still thriving
Potatoes are great for kids to grow. Even something like a dwarf cherry tomato plant. In autumn, you can get them to plant spring bulbs or now for summer bulbs. Runner beans are also an easy grower. Another idea, is to save a pair of their old wellies, and you can make holes in them for planters. They can have their own strawberries or sow calendula, and you can also show them how to make salves and soaps.
Thanks Alan will most definitely be doing this with my Son!
Alan please can you recommend any Plants I can put in different size containers in my garden 😊 live in Devon near dartmoor, in summer it can be quite hot, cold in winter and nearly always windy as quite exposed. I love scented plants but anything will be gratefully received Thankyou 😊 from Nettie
Our granddaughters get their own tomato plants which they learn from & also enjoy picking / eating the small varieties straight off the vines ! These ideas are great, Alan. Thks.👍
