How did these two different parts of the trunk merge into an arch?

Two branches, one from each tree, grew into each other over the span of years. Eventually they merged. The ends died and dropped off, leaving the conjoined stubs as an arch.

It’s called inosculation. It is essentially caused by friction causing damage to one stem or the other and the damaged stem trying to compartmentaliE the damaged area. If you want to do more research on your own read into inosculation and Codit (compartmentalization of decay/damage in trees)
