PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (CBS12) — A 21-year-old motorcyclist was killed Sunday afternoon in a crash on Alternate A1A in Palm Beach Gardens, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash happened around 3:52 p.m. on Feb. 15 in the northbound lanes of Alternate A1A near Hood Road. Authorities previously said the collision shut down northbound lanes in the area, causing significant traffic delays while deputies investigated and cleared the roadway.

Investigators identified the motorcyclist as Jake D. Melvin, 21, of Palm Beach Gardens.

According to the sheriff’s office traffic division report, Melvin was riding a 2021 Yamaha motorcycle northbound in the inside lane at a high rate of speed. A 2021 Lexus SUV was traveling northbound in the center lane ahead of him.

Deputies say the motorcyclist lost control of the bike, which overturned. Melvin was ejected and both he and the motorcycle slid northbound. The motorcycle then overtook the Lexus and struck it in the left rear, according to the report.

Melvin, who was wearing a helmet, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Lexus was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured.

Deputies confirmed next-of-kin have been notified.

The crash remains under investigation.
