Is soil blocking a better way to grow seeds? Lets Try it! I tracked zinnia growth every week for 6 weeks to see if the results live up to the claims, and I compared them with traditional seed started cells and soil. We’ll go over the soil to use, how to make the blocks, and proper watering. Plus, I’m sharing what happened, what surprised me, and whether I’ll keep using soil blocks in my own gardening. Thanks for watching, Steph🌱 #flowers #gardening #diy #plants

  2. I’ve been soil blocking for 3 years and am ready to start seeds for this season, using Fort Vee Compost as my soil medium. I DO believe this soil does make a difference, and I use it when growing annual cuttings, too. Because I tend to start seeds way too early (I can’t be the only one, right?) I move the small soil blocks to a seed tray filled with regular potting soil until ready to go outside (mid May/Memorial day weekend, north west Michigan) and the roots continue to air prune vs becoming impacted in seedling containers.

  3. Soil blocking in 2" blocks is my favorite way to start zinnias! Direct sowing tends to result in powdery mildew. I also soil block my snapdragons, sunflowers…

  4. Thank you for sharing this info. I believe that from Lisa ZMs videos and book that soil blocking creates root pruning so that the plant grows stronger and faster. I have never seen a soil blocker like the one shown today.

  5. Hi Steph 🌺. I love these experiments. The seeds grew perfectly in the soil blocking, as if they had been fertilized. It's an excellent soil mix. Great weekend. 🌻🌺🌻🌺🌻🌺

  6. Wonderful that you help us gardeners see what options are available . I love soil blocking, you get robust transplants. The 2” blocker grows super healthy dahlias. This year I’m trying out – Black Forest Ruby- in 4 weeks most are around 7-10 inches tall.

  7. I like that there is less of a need to up pot when soil blocking. I’m guessing the smaller area for roots was a huge factor in less growth for the trays. My zinnias are huge after 4 weeks prob because I up potted from the tray to a larger pot.

  8. Great experiment and a fun video with two of my favorite YouTube gardeners. I decided to go back to soil blocking – haven't done it for a few decades – but I'm starting with the tiny blocks to germinate; certainly saves space under the lights, for a little while, anyway. I hope you did this last year because where in the world will you keep those seedlings while we're under 2 feet of snow!

  9. Thank you, that took away the fear of soil blocking. I like those Swiss made tools, they seem a little less intimidating than the spring release ones. Thanks to both of you for showing us how and giving us the soil recipe. I will watch Steffi's video too. Also, thanks for reminding me of such a good book Cool Flowers. I need to read that again 🙂

  10. I purchased a soil block two years ago but it's been sitting on my shelf in my Potting Shed since. After today's video I feel a bit more inclined to use it, especially now that I learned the proper ratio from soil to water. Thanks so much for having Steffi on your channel and linking her for us. I'll be using more soil blocks for my flowers and herbs from now on. Thanks!

  11. Very interesting!!! I’m going to try winter sowing my gomphrena this year. We are in the same zone. Have you started your gomphrena yet??

  12. Funny, I never knew seed blocking was a thing! Are the heated mats a good purchase for starting seeds? Going to try annual flower seeds this year.
