I'm finally getting around to inspecting the trees at my new house, and found a crop of dense hard mushrooms growing on the side of one of my plums.

Mushrooms like rotting material. Is this a death knell for the tree? Are there other things I should look for?

Fungal fruiting bodies are a sign of internal decay in the stem.  But,  assuming the tree isn’t very big and doesn’t have major imbalance,  it will likely survive for years to come.

My guess is it’s the cut limb rotting, if the rest of the tree is healthy then I wouldn’t be too worried.

Also, those might be turkey tail mushrooms. Those can be somewhat valuable to foragers, so I wouldn’t just throw them away. Might be able to sell them
