Previously, both food waste and garden waste were collected together in one collection round in 66 per cent of Brussels, as this was more economical for the refuse collection lorries. However, from 23 March onwards, garden waste in green bags will no longer be collected weekly in the Brussels region, but every two weeks. Food waste in orange bags will still be collected weekly.

In a press release, refuse company Net Brussel explains that since 2023, food waste must be separated from garden waste. The volume of bio-waste collected (garden waste and food waste) has risen steadily since then. In 2022, 17,800 tonnes were collected, while in 2024 this figure had already risen to 31,700 tonnes.

Food and garden waste separated

However, due to stricter waste processing regulations, Net Brussel has now decided to transport the waste separately. Initially, waste processing companies accepted the mixed waste stream without any problems, but this has changed since an EU obligation to separate food waste came into force. Belgian fermentation plants were becaming increasingly saturated. The mixed Brussels inflow also increasingly faces strict acceptance criteria.

According to the refuse company, the new schedule suits the people of Brussels, who produce little garden waste. Residents can still take their garden waste to the Recyparks whenever they wish. Net Brussel is launching an information campaign to alert people to the changes.
