Have had this guy for a few years. The first couple were inside, but it’s been potted outside for about 1.5-2 years (this is not the first winter outside). I planted it in ground about a month ago and just noticed this drastic change recently. I live in zone 9b California, it’s rained once since planting and hasn’t gotten below freezing.

Looks like sunburn, but that makes less sense because of it being there over a year.
Is it cold burned? If that’s the shady side, maybe it got to cold but the sunny side avoided the damage?
It looks like a heavy infestation of scales to me
what did you plant it in?
how often do you water it
how did you prep the ground before planting?
