Who would have thought that a pair of pre-loved shoes or gently used utensils could make a positive impact on the environment and a community at large?

With renewed hope and new opportunities winking on the horizon, residents of Farrarmere Gardens are taking another leap, this time focusing on beautifying their neighbourhood.

“Funds raised through our charity shop have generated enough for us to purchase two brushcutters,” said Nelia du Plessis, a Northmead resident who adopted the suburb in 2024 in an effort to uplift and restore the dignity of its residents.

“We are now moving towards doing regular maintenance in the open spaces bordering the Gardens, as well as maintaining the veld in Maalstroom Street where the weekly soup kitchen takes place.”

She explained that the regular grass cutting is about more than rejuvenating the area.

“Keeping the grass short and the area clean adds to resident safety as well as curbing vagrancy,” she said.

“This initiative further aids in job creation. Willing and able residents will be employed to conduct routine maintenance, thus allowing them to earn an income.”

She reiterated that continued fundraising through the sale of good-quality pre-loved goods will enable them to further extend their reach in creating sustainable opportunities for residents.

“We invite members of the community to support this clean-up initiative either by visiting the shop or by making donations towards the project,” said Du Plessis.

“The impact through beautification will not only benefit the Gardens residents but the surrounding areas as well.”
