I just noticed this bark splitting off my Silver Maple as we’re starting to thaw out after a month of very cold weather in PA. The bark is peeling from about 1/5 of the circumference of the tree. This side of the tree has had fungi growing on it for years and there are no branches on this side. Upon pressing on the wood underneath where the bark is coming off, it is completely rotten. The tree still makes leaves on the branches on the other side of the tree so it’s not completely dead. Should I have it cut down given this situation? If it were to fall it would hit my fence and possibly my freestanding garage.

The tree has been dead in that section for quite a while, you can see it has already started compartmentalizing.
These photos don’t show the whole tree. I would recommend an arborist come out and look, and see if it could be left a few years or if it needs more immediate attention
That has been like that for years it has began healing the bark on the edges…you can pull all the dead bark off easily.. now is it going to fall anytime soon. Not likely but it is going to decline over time… trees can like a hundred years like that and be fine or they can fall over tomorrow… need an arborist to look to get an assessment but some are biased to make a sale…
