The Ramona Garden Club awarded $500 grants to the Wildlife Research Institute, which organizes Hawk Watch, and to Critter Encounters.
The grants were presented at the Jan. 17 Hawk Watch held at Begent Ranch.
The grants encourage community beautification, conservation of natural resources and advance educational projects that support wildlife preservation, club members said.
Wildlife Research Institute is a San Diego County-based nonprofit that is dedicated to the preservation of wildlife through research, education, advocacy, cooperative work with government agencies, and land trust management.
The institute oversees the annual Hawk Watch educational program that features falcons and ambassador raptors at the Ramona Grasslands in January and February.
Robert Holton, president of the Ramona Garden Club, said the grant will support the institute’s marketing for Hawk Watch and the Poison Free San Diego Program.
“Our grant was to help them purchase marketing and educational materials,” Holton said.

The other grant recipient, Critter Encounters, is a live animal education company that offers up-close animal presentations at schools and private events.
Under the leadership of CEO and founder Andrea Burgan, Critter Encounters also manages an animal sanctuary with more than 60 rescued animals.
“Critter Encounters’ recent move to a larger area has given them room to plant a garden to help feed the animals,” Holton said. “The Ramona Garden Club awarded a grant to help Critter Encounters create that garden.”
