Households blessed with a garden have been encouraged to introduce one particular feature to their outdoor areas ahead of spring. As birds gear up to bid farewell to winter, this is an opportune moment to extend some kindness their way.
Many of us take pleasure in observing the comings and goings of birds in our gardens, but there’s one addition that could encourage them to linger longer. The RSPB suggests installing a simple nest box in your garden.
According to the conservation charity, it’s the most straightforward method of assisting our feathered friends.
Merely erecting a nest box can lure birds to your garden, providing them with a sanctuary to rest. With National Nest Box Week just around the corner, now is the perfect time to invest in one.

Nest boxes are typically £10 to £20 but can be found for less online. The RPSB explained: “Putting out bird food is great, but if birds don’t have access to nesting sites, they won’t have anywhere to raise the next generation reports the Express.
“It’s also key that the nest sites are nearby to foraging locations, where they can find plenty of invertebrates without leaving the nest for too long.”
These boxes usually boast a small entrance hole, just large enough for smaller birds to squeeze through. This design prevents larger creatures from gaining access, ensuring the occupants are shielded from the elements.
Selecting a nest box can also benefit specific bird species. The RSPB highlighted: “Although Swifts aren’t due back until late April, these are birds badly in need of a helping hand.
“Between 1995 and 2021, numbers plummeted by 62% in the UK, with a lack of suitable nest sites a contributing factor.
“Different birds favour different types of nest boxes.”
A purpose-built Swift box will entice the birds to remain.
Starling populations have declined in recent years, though they’re equally keen on nest boxes. Robins opt for open-fronted nest boxes, where rather than an entrance hole, the front panel is partially removed.
Whichever option you choose, you’ll need to ensure they’re cleared out during autumn. The ideal time for this is September, provided the nest is no longer occupied.
Given that we’re now moving towards spring, it’s advisable to leave the nest boxes undisturbed to avoid unsettling the birds.
