Hellebore bring a delightful display to the winter garden. They are one of very few plants that give us such an eye-catching display over the dark and cold months.

Hellebore are a hardy perennial that can cope with winter’s weather. They come in reds, purples, green, yellows, whites and blacks. Hellebore can show their flowers from autumn to winter, which are the months we so need interest and colour in the garden. The ideal place to plant Hellebore is under trees and shrubs as they prefer part to full shade.

The soil should ideally be soft and moist to keep them at their peak. We can plant them in pots, beds and borders right now, they want to grow and display during autumn and winter.

We should avoid planting in frozen ground but planting now means they take root and be ready for flowering next autumn and winter. To plant Hellebore we need to dig a hole twice the size of the root ball to gently place it into.

You can gently massage the root ball before planting to loosen the roots, but avoid this if you think it could snap any fragile roots.

Hellebore are one of my favourite seasonal plants and my interest turns to them for colour on the dark and short days.

Last week, Tom recommended a shade-tolerant plant that will have lovely green leaves in spring.
