First time growing onions so any help/ advice is much appreciated. Seems like the first few “leaves” to break through have started to die but there is still good growth. Is that normal?
They look too tall for how skinny they are. You may need more light. If they get too leggy and still not enough light they will die off like this.

By the time any allium is that tall it should have way more mass. The “stems” should be far thicker than they are. Looks like a light issue to me.

Not sure if that heat mat is still on but all seedling should come off as soon as germination. Yout onions look like they need light as they’re falling over. Direct sunlight is the best if it’s warm enough to get them outside.
Mine are 3 weeks old and under grow lights. I’ve given them a cut which helps them stand up straight.
Next time before you start seeds…sift/strain your soil. Looks like you have a lot of bigger particles in there. Big particles can block teeny tiny roots from growing. You want fine soil. If you don’t have a metal screen to sift through…borrow your kitchen colander. It’s just dirt. You can wash it in the dishwasher. That will screen out all that big stuff.
