I have a beautiful magnolia in my backyard. When we bought our building, the place next door was going up, and they'd already cut off some major branches, so since then, I've been trying to deal with the regrowth. I have access to the deck of the building, so can get in close to the area circled, which is where the largest limb was removed.
I've been trying to select a branch to replace, and get it to grow up and then out over the deck, and it's sort of working, but of course every year there are a ton of other small branches that sprout.
My question is: is this a workable idea? If I just keep on it, will I be able to gradually get this regrowth to dominate the twiggy other branches? Is there something else I should be doing? I'm an experienced garden pruner, but that's it. I have a pole trimmer, and try to do what I need to from the ground with that or from the deck.
Pink is potential replacement branches, yellow places to prune.
The tree is robust, by the way, and has been doing great, despite this unfortunate limb removal.
