MEDINA, Ohio – As February turns to March, many start yearning for spring and more than 2,000 visitors are expected to kick off the season at the 39th annual Medina County Home and Garden Show Feb. 28 through March 1.
In celebration of the nation’s 250th birthday, the show will include a patriotic theme. The focal point of the main garden will be a 13-foot by 8-foot American flag made completely of plants. Local artists will demonstrate colonial crafts in the garden including spinning and weaving, finger pottery and working with leather.
Medina’s John Burke will be in full dress uniform representing Revolutionary War Colonel James Smith who was captured and adopted by Indians during the French and Indian War and spent the winter of 1756 at Whipp’s Ledges in Hinckley. He was later commissioned as a Colonel in the Revolutionary War, fighting in three battles with General Washington.
Veterans with military ID will be admitted free to the show March 1 to thank them for their service.
Linda Loveless, who has been organizing the show since 2009, said the show used to take place at the Medina County Joint Vocational Center, currently known as the Medina County Career Center.
“They started it to showcase their programs and as the school grew, they just didn’t have room for it,” Loveless said. “I got word that they were no longer going to continue, and I approached them about taking it over. I had been organizing craft shows like Affair on the Square Craft and Vintage Fair on Medina’s square and it seemed a logical addition to my events. I moved the location to the Medina County Community Center at the fairgrounds and have been running it since.”
Loveless said in 2021, the show took place as an online event with COVID concerns still prevalent.
