“Families will attend a brief orientation session during with they will receive gardening materials including planting containers, soil, seeds, transplants, fertilizer and anything they will need to grow their container garden,” said Kelley.
“Mallory and I will provide the initial education workshop in March. Families will meet their Extension Master Gardener mentor. We will also present basic vegetable gardening tips and techniques,” said O’Rear. “Later in June we will present a maintenance and harvest workshop to the families. Also, an Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP)agent will teach nutritional information and tips for using fresh vegetable in recipes.”
USDA research indicates that not including healthy foods in a diet leads to increased obesity rates, increased health challenges and financial struggles. The Alabama Cooperative Extension System shares research-based information with stakeholders throughout Alabama.
