BOSSIER CITY, La. – As gardeners begin thinking ahead to spring planting, one LSU AgCenter expert says now is the perfect time to prepare to start seeds indoors.

At the Red River Research Station, horticulturist Mark Wilson with the LSU AgCenter said timing is key for successful vegetables and flowers. In Northwest Louisiana, the typical first outdoor planting date for vegetables is around April 1, which means gardeners should start seedlings several weeks ahead.

“We want them to be about three weeks old when we plant them outside,” Wilson explained. “This is the perfect time of year to get started.”

Wilson demonstrated several simple methods for seed starting, noting gardeners don’t need expensive supplies. Traditional seed trays or small pots work well, and biodegradable paper containers can be planted directly into the soil. Even household items can be repurposed.

“If you don’t have seed trays, you can use an old metal dish for cooking,” he said. “Just layer your soil and start your seeds right in it.”

Once seedlings emerge, careful handling is important. Wilson recommends gently lifting young plants — even using everyday tools such as a spork — and transplanting them into larger containers once roots begin developing.
