Hey all,

I have a lawn in Denton, TX that needs some work. I have struggled to maintain it over the last few years, and have had weird issues in the summer/fall '25.

I realize that grass is dormant now, and that I need to get some pre-emergent on soon. I have already begun to see dandelions popping up, and some clover that is spreading around the patio are and fence line. I am interested in knowing what pre-emergent is best suited for this lawn type, as I have only previously used Scotts Turfbuilder triple action. I haven't had much success, as I am still dealing with the clover, dandelions, and crabgrass every year.

Also, I have had a rough go with fire-ants this last year. There was a bad rain storm in the early summer of '25 which flooded my yard for a day or so, and after that, my lawn has become super soft and spongy, even when completely dry. Where the lawn used to be lush, with a firm top layer that was normal to walk on, it is now super soft, with my feet sinking a good 1/2 inch in some areas. There have been massive fire ant piles that I have spot treated as they pop up, but they keep reappearing. I am thinking that the rain washed a bunch of ants into my yard where they took over, and have been spreading under the surface. Lawn has been sandy/grainy, like a fire ant nest all over the surface, leading me to believe this may be a bigger issue.

You can see pic 4- this is an old fire ant pile at the edge of the driveway.
Pic 5: this is what our lawn looked like in July of 25 (sorry for the cropped pic, this is the only one I could find).

Has anyone else experienced a shift in lawn texture like this before, and if so, how did you restore it? I'd prefer to not have to strip and re-sod, as the rest of the lawn is usually pretty healthy once the seasons change.
