COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – The recent winter freeze has taken a toll on some plants across the Brazos Valley.

But experts suggest you hold off on cutting back any parts of your damaged plants right now.

“One of my colleagues always says, ‘hurry up and wait,’” said Tim Hartmann with Texas A&M AgriLife. “That’s harder to do sometimes, but it’ll really make a difference in your plants.”

He says one option is the knife test.

“You can kind of scratch the bark, look at the cambium. But really it’s better just to wait and the plant will tell you where it’s injured to, how far back its frozen,” said Hartmann.

He says leaving some of the dead foliage can help shelter and protect your plant.
