I remember seeing commercials for Aqua Globes growing up in the 2000’s. I’m now into gardening myself and was wondering if these actually worked well? Did anyone use these?

  1. My friend has these, they seem ok and kinda work, but aren’t amazing as her plants still end up dying.

Same goes for the type that has the clay bottoms you flip the globe onto.

Downside is they tend to make a divot like any watering does, so you need to move the soil back every now and then.

Eh, more effort than reward. I use them as pot decor now.

You can just use a wine bottle and it holds more water

I think some fires have started because of items like this! The sun hits the glass and it can concentrate enough heat that a fire starts – so if you do use just ensure it doesn’t sit in direct sun

theyre decent short-term like if you’re leaving for a week and want to make sure an already watered plant stays moist (if you put it in dry dirt itll drain immediately). but in general they’re more trouble then theyre worth. pretty though!

I’ve used them for office plants and it did pretty well. I’d fill it up like 2-3x a week(wasn’t always completely empty I just wanted to keep to a schedule so I didn’t forget). I ended up with a rather large ivy. It would definitely be too much work for a bunch of plants or outside.

For my mom she uses a knock off version from the dollar store for her house plants they seem to all be living some how

My MIL still uses them. They’re great for little plants so she doesn’t kill them.

Yes, they still sell them at Home Depot. I use them for my indoor potted plants. I love them.

they technically function but hold a very small amount of water, it pokes a big hole in the soil, then soil gets in the long skinny part and is super difficult to wash out because the glass is so thin at the end, you can’t get a good water flow thru it. they’re super pretty but sit unused, just too fussy

These are still super popular in Europe. Granted I’ve never seen them full still and seem to just be decoration but a lot of people have them.

Man these were everywhere back in the day. Didn’t these burn a few houses down because they acted like a magnifying glass? Lol

10/10 for aesthetics but 2/10 for actual watering like they’re just pretty glass straws for dirt

I got a few a couple years ago thinking it was going to be a game changer and now they are largely pretty decorations in my houseplants pots. They run out of water fast, and most annoying the tip would stuff with dirt often sticking it into the soil causing water to not come out.

I hated getting soil stuck in the spout and trying to clean it out and refill it when I should’ve been out weeding and pruning

Mine got clogged with dirt and did not work.

The balls held very little water so you frequently had to refill them. The other issue is that it was a common fire hazard as the balls acted as a magnifying glass when it was left where the sun reached. Lots of people reported carpets, books, and even the plant burning. They were super pretty though.
