Dream Basketball

Artist: Colin Roberts

Los Angeles needs basketball like humans need oxygen. It is a city that survives on this sport. It brings us together like no other. We come together from every hood, every corner, and every suburb. Our spirits are renewed while we witness the dreams, passion and energy of the players.

The Dream Basketball is a celebration of the game. It is made up of hundreds of dichroic and mirror acrylic tiles, glued together by hand, one piece at a time. Just like a basketball team, every connection on the sculpture is important for the piece to be successful. Like the game, the transparent colors of the sculpture change and shift, reflecting the dreams and hopes of the world’s best players and spectators, and bringing us all together to celebrate the game.

About Colin Roberts

The three-dimensional mosaic sculptures of Colin Roberts are meditations on light, architecture and dreams. They are a careful balance of surrealism, pop culture and technical feat. The work reinterprets various imagery into futuristic, fantastical forms and figures. The sculptures are meticulously handcrafted from hundreds of acrylic tiles, glued together one by one to create the whole form. Light travels through and reflects off the sculptures, filling the surrounding space with shards of color and light. The color shifting tiles and light are reminiscent of dreams, while the complexity of the structures is a unique form of self-taught architecture.

Through this, the work crosses significant cultural, social and psychic boundaries. Colin graduated Otis School of Art and Design in 2001 and currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
