Garden Plain veterans raise $884 from aluminum cans to fund veteran trip

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Two Garden Plain veterans raised $884 by collecting and recycling aluminum cans to fund a trip for a fellow veteran.

Gene Scheer and Vietnam War veteran Larry Howell loaded and hauled 1,360 pounds of cans to Allmetal Recycling, LLC.

Scheer, also a Vietnam War veteran, and his brother Jim, a Korea War veteran, have been funding trips for other veterans since their own Kansas Honor Flight trips.

The brothers have been collecting aluminum cans from community donations to send other veterans on what they call “trips of a lifetime.”

The recycling trip took place during February’s mild weather conditions.
