When my garden was 30 X 48 feet, I planted the entire perimeter in marigolds. Besides insects it helps repel rabbits. Now that the children are grown, I've gone to tall raised beds and still add merigolds!
Great information! Thank You!
I use marigolds with tomatoes and cucumbers. It seems that it works. And I have plenty of petals to add to salads: peppery taste:)
Great! They repel white flies. But, both Dill and marigolds attract slugs. So you're making a severe trade off. I quit planting brassicas entirely here in northern MN. I no longer have a white fly problem and the slugs are manageable with sluggo.
Unfortunately I learned the hard way that If you have spider mites marigold is their favorite plant. I’ve battled them to exhaustion 😩They completely cover them in webs if left alone. THIS year I’m going to put them in containers beside my beds and hopefully draw them away from my tomatoes. 🙏🏼Praying that it works. I’ll let yall know.
Sounds like a good test here too. Yes let’s try orange essential oil too, it’s a staple for me and not expensive in a large-ish bottle.
Thank you for bringing that up, I do use marigolds for mesquito
Not only they have a purpose but are pretty 😻❤
That’s why I’m adding other herbs n planting every inch in my garden, not leaving any space between plants
Wherever I put marigolds last year I had better results. Like you, I’m going plant more marigolds to get more of everything else.
I've been growing Dill for years for the butterfly caterpillars, which they totally strip. Nice to know that dill has additional benefits. You also mentioned using taller dill. Tetra Dill (Botanical Interest) grows up to 36 inches tall, bushy, deer resistant, heat tolerant and slow-to-bolt plus very aromatic., Also for those that don't know that the marigold flower is full of seeds which can be removed from the "dead headed" flower.
Good tips! Thanks for the advice.
Good Day Gary & Chat! I miss you all in the member chat. I just started gardening again. Things are growing though, a lot! May see you in the Spring. Love the Dill & Marigolds! I would add Nasturtiums as a repel and trap cover crop too!
Did this last year and I did not have to use any petersides.
Great video, Gary. I also grow lots of french marigolds, dill and fennel. Good thing also is that all 3 of these produce tons of seeds, so if you seed save, you will never have to purchase the seeds again!!
Oh no! I had gotten some feedback that it was ok for me to start my marigolds already. But my last frost is after yours by a couple of weeks. Crossing my fingers for a mild late winter/early spring. I had gotten that info from someone who has a LATER last frost than me and he had already started his. So I ignored the seed packet and went for it. Oops. I guess I will start more in a few weeks just in case.
I planted a row of the Lemon Drop French marigolds in front of a line of indeterminate tomatoes last year, additionally planting basil between the tomato plants which are purported to add to the "smelly" factor to disguise the attractive aroma of tomatoes to pests like the squash vine borer. Only had one SVB last year, so maybe? Another plant that is supposed to up the "smelly" factor to block the attraction of insects to tomato plants is onions. I haven't tried this before, but thought I would give it a go this year.
You're the teach! Thanks always great looks
I plan to use lime basil to hopefully ward off the vine borer from my squash.
I heard Marigold seeds need light to germinate , so no cover is good?
Highly recommend Marigold Signet Lemon & Tangerine Gems. Very petite flower but the aroma is crazy good. I understand it is strong in limonine. I grow these for "aroma therapy" – as well as pest deterrent.
