In a month when many yards are just waking up, one Port Orange garden stood out, earning Deborah Glatczak the New Smyrna Beach Garden Club’s February Garden of the Month award.
Since moving to this property eight years ago, she added several colorful annuals, perennials and shrubs to the existing landscape and created new garden areas all around the house.
Glatczak designed a large tropical backyard garden around a mature magnolia tree and several Agapanthus, which are now complemented by Blue Daze, salvia, yellow daisies, crotons, aloe and nectar plants for bees and butterflies. The outer perimeter is spaciously framed with Robellini palms, philodendrons and African iris. Orchids thrive below an Areca palm, while a pair of bronze cranes and a bird bath add decorative touches among the plantings in this serene garden. Birds, butterflies and bees are frequent visitors, which are a pleasure to watch. Stone planters filled with striking plant combinations are found throughout the front and back yards.
The lanai is a garden room that extends out to the private backyard garden and beyond. Within this relaxing space, you find a framed orchid wall, a mixture of assorted container plantings with specimen plants, plus many art objects.
Since spending most of her life in the Midwest, Glatczak’s largest challenge was learning about tropical plants, whether they prefer sun or shade, and the water they require. After researching different plants,
trees and shrubs suited for this planting zone and visiting several of the local nurseries, Glatczak found the specimens she desired and succeeded in creating a tropical paradise. The entire property exemplifies Glatczak’s artistic talent and love of gardening. Day or night, the gardens shine.
