Although I wouldn’t do it just yet (because your plant is quite young still), to encourage a more bushy and compact growth you need to continually prune it. This will also result in more leaves which you can harvest. Just cut above a leaf node (the leaf node is the point along the stem where the leaves grow out of) and it will grow new shoots out of those nodes.
Best to treat basil as an annual, so don’t take it too personally if it dies. You can increase its lifespan by removing any flowering structures as soon as you spot them – you can just pinch or cut these off. Letting it go to flower will affect the taste of the basil (making it more bitter). Not the end of the world, not like it’ll be bad, but it won’t be great either.
You can take cuttings of your basil as you prune it and root these in water in order to get more plants.
