You can always smell the rot. Fertilizers can color the roots. You can use UC roots to keep it sterile and it’ll keep the roots white.

Looks like a start of a rot or fungi. If it smells funky or feels slimy that’s it for sure.
You need to dump the container, sanitize it with Clorox, wash well and fill it up again with filtered water and dash of nutrients (make sure your nutrients are not the cause for this contamination as well, are you using liquid fertilizer?)
Now you need to add more oxygen to the reservoir by adding an air pump (covert it to a DWC) or mix in some Hydrogen peroxide to release oxygen. Assuming this is a 5 gallon bucket from the picture, I would add 50ml of hydrogen peroxide to this almost full bucket, that’s roughly 3 tablespoons. Good luck!
